Amid nationwide outrage over the alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has vowed to fight for justice until the perpetrators are held accountable.
Speaking after meeting a four-member BJP fact-finding team in Kolkata on Monday, Adhikari condemned the incident as a grim reflection of the state’s law and order situation and said, “The safety of our daughters is non-negotiable.”
The BJP’s fact-finding delegation, formed by party president JP Nadda, includes:
- Former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi
- Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra
- Lok Sabha MP and former Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb
The team visited South Calcutta Law College, met senior police officials, and assessed the status of the ongoing investigation into the June 25 incident, where a female student was allegedly gangraped on the college premises in the Kasba area.
Satpal Singh, leading the team, called the incident part of a “disturbing pattern” in West Bengal. “The kind of incidents taking place in West Bengal are no longer isolated—they reflect a systemic failure,” he said. He also raised concerns over how a person with four prior criminal cases could be admitted to a law college.
Echoing his sentiments, Meenakshi Lekhi questioned the ruling Trinamool Congress’s silence on rising crimes against women. “Why are such crimes happening in a state that has a woman as its Chief Minister?” she asked.
Manan Kumar Mishra alleged that the accused had links with the TMC and accused the government and investigative agencies of deliberate negligence. “This is not just failure—it points to the ruling party’s complicity,” he said.
Biplab Kumar Deb demanded accountability from CM Mamata Banerjee, saying, “She should be ashamed that the opposition has to come and demand justice. Why was a criminal appointed to a law college despite his record?”
Kolkata Police stated that all three accused named in the FIR were arrested within 12 hours of the crime, and a fourth suspect was later apprehended based on additional evidence.
Suvendu Adhikari reiterated the BJP’s commitment to ensuring justice for the survivor. “This incident reflects the complete collapse of law and order under Mamata Banerjee’s governance. We will not rest until the culprits are punished and women in Bengal feel safe again,” he said.
The party has called for stronger measures to combat rising crimes against women and demanded accountability from the state leadership.
